Kurdistan Region-Iraq Strategic Position in Ensuring Iraqi Water Security

Abstract

This study examines the strategic importance of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region for Iraqi water security, given the growing environmental and political challenges related to water. It reviews the Kurdistan Region's water resources, identifies challenges, such as poor coordination between Baghdad and Erbil, that limit their ability to support the Iraqi water system, and proposes solutions. Based on a literature review and analysis of available water resources in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, this study assesses the region's hydrological potential and proposes cooperation mechanisms for stakeholders. It concludes that enhancing the KRG's participation in Iraqi water security requires integrated institutional coordination, economic infrastructure development, and a fair and sustainable water policy.
