A Discourse Analysis to Synonyms and Antonyms in the Adaptation of JoJo Moyes’s ‘Me before You’

Abstract

A careful analysis of the lexical relations of synonyms and antonyms was conducted in Jojo Moyes’ “Me before You,” cinematic adaptation. The analysis explored the lexical relations aiming to understand the linguistic choices made by Moyes as the novelist and the screenwriter, thereby enhancing the understanding of the effects of both mediums and demonstrating the importance and potency of language as a bridge between book and film, i.e., cinema and literature. The movie’s use of language and its presentation of the love story demonstrate how it remained true to the novel while maintaining its worth. The overall thematic resonance of the film is revealed via the examination of the selected lexical relations.
