The Name and surname of the Character in the Novel “The City of White Musicians” from the Perspective of Ferdinand de Saussure’s Semiotics

Abstract

This research abstract presents an analysis of Bakhtiar Ali's novel The City of the White Musicians, focusing specifically on the character appellations (names and nickname). Character names in the novel are not merely simple literary labels, but rather function as critical tools for deconstructing issues of identity, oppression, and freedom within a troubled society that necessitates exposure. For this purpose, the novel genre proves most effective, as it reveals society's hidden aspects—particularly when an analysis can utilize "names and nickname " to illuminate these hidden dimensions. These appellations serve as a mirror reflecting Kurdish society. In this novel, "name and title" articulate the struggle between being and non-being for the individual under an oppressive system. Furthermore, the novel transforms a fantastical narrative into an exploration of significant philosophical and political questions.The research structure, besides the introduction, conclusion, and source list, consists of two parts:Part One: Explores semiotics from a Saussurean perspective, examining the construction and function of character names and titles.Part Two: Interprets the meanings of these names and nickname, uncovering their hidden significances and conducting a detailed analysis to differentiate them. This enables an understanding of the author's rationale and intent in assigning these specific appellations with such precision.
