Risk Management Strategies in Economic Institutions: A Contextual Analysis of Challenges and Innovations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Abstract

This study uses a qualitative approach to evaluate risk management strategies in economic institutions within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), a resource-dependent and post-conflict region facing unique economic and political challenges. Using a case study approach, the research identifies key challenges such as political instability, currency fluctuations, and heavy reliance on oil revenues. Five interviewees, including a managing director, economist, policymaker, financial manager, and risk analyst, were randomly selected from these 5 intuitions based on purpose, availability and convenience. Thematic analysis was conducted on interview transcripts and open-ended survey responses to identify recurring themes, such as governance challenges, financial constraints, and innovative practices. The study highlights significant challenges faced by economic institutions in KRI, including political instability, currency fluctuations, and reliance on oil revenues. According to the findings, while current risk management practices are fragmented and reactive, emerging innovations in technology and data analytics present opportunities for improvement. Comparative analysis with other emerging economies highlights actionable lessons, including adopting advanced risk management tools, diversifying revenue streams, and fostering institutional capacity. The study recommends the importance of tailored policy interventions, emphasizing stronger regulatory frameworks, capacity building, economic diversification, and leveraging technology for real-time risk mitigation.
